What is Lupus: Its Causes, Types, Symptoms, Treatment And Risk Factors

Written by Inguin Team

Lupus is an autoimmune chronic disease which affects various organs of body like kidney, skin, blood, heart, lungs, and other organs. It causes inflammation and swelling on the affected area. When the body is functioning normally, it produces antibodies which fight viruses and bacteria from entering the system. When the body is affected with Lupus, the immune system changes the direction of the antibodies and they attack the healthy tissues and this causes inflammation, tissue damage, pain, and swelling. External or internal parts of the body can be affected by Lupus.

“Is Lupus Fatal or Can you die from lupus?

The blood cells produce a protein called the antibodies which fights the viruses and keeps the immune system strong. When the body is affected by Lupus, the immune system is unable to recognize foreign bodies as well as the ones protecting the body. When the body responds to Lupus producing antibodies, this creates inflammation and rashes as a result. This is not a contagious disease, and there are duration of flare ups and remissions. This disease can attack the DNA of the organs causing damage to them.

What causes Lupus and types of this disease?

Lupus can be caused due to genetic as well as environmental factors. Also, overexposure to sunlight and certain chemicals can also lead to this disease. There is no permanent cure for this disease, and it can only be controlled through medication. Lupus that affects the skin area is called Discoid Lupus. This is the type of Lupus that only affects parts of the skin like face, neck, and scalp, and does not affect internal organs. It does not progress in systematic pattern, hence, the severity of its occurrence cannot be predicted.

SLE also known as Systemic Lupus Erythematosus is a type of Lupus that can affect any internal part of the body and even the organ system. Though SLE is severe and affects organs like heart, joints, kidney, blood, etc, it only flares up with symptoms and inflammation only when it is active. When certain prescription drugs cause the disease, the symptoms are similar to SLE. This is the type of Lupus that becomes inactive and subsites when you stop taking that drug. There are more than 400 drugs that can cause Lupus as a side effect.
