What Is Prostate Cancer
Prostate cancer is related to the male reproductive organ and spreads easily if not detected early. If you are facing problem with urination, then this is the first symptom that you must not ignore and get diagnosed early. The prostate gland is a small sized gland that stores secretions and fluids that are going to be expelled from the body. This gland lies in front of the rectum and below the bladder, and is also a part of the male reproductive system. Since, this gland nourishes the sperm with the liquid and the required protein that helps in creating human life, any blood in the semen or urine must be checked immediately.
Causes and symptoms of prostate cancer
In the initial stages, the cells in the prostate gland change their size and shape, and at this stage cancer cannot be diagnosed. These cells change their size in 50% of men who are above the age of 50. When this cancer spreads, it mostly affects the bones. One of the few symptoms are the frequency to urinate, erectile dysfunction, and difficulty urinating, or blood in the urine.
This is the type of cancer that is most common amongst men who are above the age of 50 and largely affects 60% of men in U.S. Men who intake a higher quantity of red meat are likely to get affected by this disease. Obesity is also a factor that leads to this type of cancer.
Like most of the cancers, this cancer too is diagnosed by:
- Tissue biopsy
- Prostate level exam
- Rectal exam
Cells contain genes, and they must be controlled to ensure that their is no abnormality. When there are changes in the genes at the DNA level, it is not easy to diagnose it unless it reaches an advanced stage. The real cause of this cancer is still not known. A few percentage of people get affected by this disease because of changes in the inherited genes.
Men whose intake in fatty foods is higher and have lower intake of fruits and vegetables are known to get affected by this cancer. Any inflammation or infection in the prostate gland must be checked and diagnosed immediately.
Treatment and prevention of this disease
Ethnicity and gene pool are largely responsible for this cancer to occur. It is rare in men who are under the age of 45 years. When this cancer is diagnosed at its early stage, it can be treated successfully and restore the functioning of the gland to its original state. Radiation therapy, a surgery called the radical prostatectomy, where the prostate is removed, brachytherapy- where the radioactive seeds are implanted to carry out the radiation therapy on the affected cells, are few of the treatments for prostate cancer.
There are various types of radiation therapy treatments for this type of cancer depending upon the severity of the disease. Fertility and reproduction also becomes a problem with men who get affected by this disease. Before the surgery or the treatment, sperm can be donated to a sperm bank and the patient can also consult the fertility doctors for treatment that fosters child birth.
If this cancer is detected at an early stage, the person can survive upto 5 years and the rate of survival post treatment is 29%. If this cancer is diagnosed and treated before it spreads to the other organs, the change of survival is for 15years with the chances of survival of 96%.
